title : Visit to Malioboro street
Jalan Malioboro is a major shopping street in here in Yogyakarta and is well-known for many popular and expensive branded batik shops along the street, the sidewalks on both sides of the street are crammed with small stalls peddling a variety of goods such as handicraft, fashion products, T-shirts, Batik apparel, souvenirs, slippers and many other items that may interest a tourist.
This street is the epicenter of Yogyakarta's largest tourist district and has many hotels and restaurants within the vicinity. How did the name come about? Well in the late 80’s, a cigarette advertisement was placed on the first building south of the railway line - or effectively the last building on Malioboro, which advertised Marlboro cigarettes, no doubt appealing to locals and foreigners who would see a pun with name of the street with a foreign product being advertised – Source: Wikipedia Streets are filled and brimming with Andongs (horse carriages) and Becaks (pedicabs). Batik Keris, a popular and well-known local Batik brand. Tourist T-shirts are plentiful. A local craftsman enterprisingly at work. Beautiful evening. In the evening we discovered a well-furnished restoran near the hostel! Its owned by an Army General and the food is not bad. A Majapahit-era Empire ship model Pleasant way to sum up the night. |
