title : Pasaraya Manggarai
Jakarta pasaraya manggarai

Today I decided to check out Pasaraya manggarai, a semi-shopping centre area at Manggarai area that I had passed by earlier before. The building is sparsely furnished and filled with departmental-store style layout and products, mainly clothing, shoes, travel bags and accessories.

Almost everything was yelling out “SALE”, “Discount” or “Low Prices”, and I bought a cheap pair of LEVI’s for only S$20! It wasn’t the latest model, but who cares.

After that I saw the rare and dying breed of traditional transportation that I have been looking out for - the Bemo. With documentation of this particular vehicle, my information on the types of local transportation in Jakarta is almost complete.

I took one to Jakarta monumen proklamasi.

The Gedung Proklamasi (Proclamation Building) is the historical site of Indonesian independence, where on August 17th, 1945 Soekarno-Hatta (Indonesian first president and vice-president) declared the nation's independence.

Upon arrival, it was somewhat disappointing. I could imagine it having lost all its former grandeur. The place isn’t like MONAs with a museum to visit, nor the grandness of the Mahabharata monument (Arjuna Kencana Kereta) monument with it’s flowing waterfall and lights at night or the central position in the middle of a roundabout like the Selamat Datang (Welcome Monument).

Now it’s just deserted with the two forlorn statues staring at the empty foyer grounds in front of them, you can almost imagine their sad expressions at their current desolate state. And young children are taking advantage of all that empty space to play a game of football.
