National Elderly Day 2011

It’s a nice Sunday today and today I volunteered to join Kalbe Farma’s “Elderly National Day”, and activity named “Usia emas tetap berkreasi” or “Golden age still can be creative, a special National Elderly day with the theme "Golden Age of creativity to Stay" at the Hall of the University of Indonesia, Depok and will have an expected turn out of 1,000 elderly people from all around Jakarta.

This event is held annually in conjunction with PT Kalbe Farma Tbk. (Kalbe) through Ethical Kalbe Customer Care (KECC) in collaboration with University of Indonesia (UI) CAS (Center of Aging Studies, University of Indonesia) as well as the National Commission on Ageing (National Commission for the Elderly). This year it is held at the University of Indonesia’s main campus at Depok - UI Kampus Raya following the last year's success at Senayan.



The place requires an hour’s drive from Kalbe’s main office in Cempaka and we got up early, left the office by 5am, and reached at UI at about 6 plus to set up the booths and prepare the areas.

The event begins with a healthy walk around the lake of the campus (danau) in which participants who took part were divided into groups. The series of activities held in them was a leisurely stroll, health talk, health checks (blood pressure, blood sugar, and bone density checks), health products bazaar, dance lessons, a photo booth and a prize draw games.




I was located at the photo booth and helped to usher the enthusiastic elderly whom despite being in their sixties or seventies are still rather spiffy and energetic! So much of the day was spent ushering pak dan ibu, and printing the photos.

The event continued with the opening of the Martha Pentaboyz followed by remarks by Ridwan Ong (Deputy Director of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk.) And Makmur Sunusi, Ph. D. (Director General of Social Rehabilitation) as representative of social ministry.

"Health problems in the elderly are currently increasing, because the elderly are the population group that became the focus of attention of society and government. For that Kalbe always support government efforts toward awareness and appreciation of the elderly, especially in the field of health. "

Guest star on that day, Mpok Atik, also entertained the participants by singing four songs of nostalgia that is quite popular in the community.

To talk show, speaker Dr. Martina Nasrun Sp.KJ. (K) and Prof. Dr. Drg. Tri Budi W. Rahardjo (Head of Ageing Studies Center, University of Indonesia), presented the theme "Go Creative Depression Stop".

Tien Kumoro (Javelin Throw senior athletes) aged 80 years and the leadership of Mr. Slamet Lumintu (Fair-itung itung Nunggu lid Age) also provided testimonials about how to live the old days of vigorous, cheerful and creative.




The entire day's events closed with lunch, free medical check ups and distribution of door prizes and goodie packs and gifts.



Ethical Kalbe Customer Care or KECC is devoted to providing information and educating the public about the overall health. Through various activities held, KECC tries to educate people’s awareness that health is something that need to be maintained. KECC routinely organizes a variety of activities for the elderly to remain healthy, active and productive, and always trying to improve the quality of the direct and comprehensive services to patients and their families and communities through education programs and developing creative and sustainable communities.

PT Kalbe Farma Tbk ("Kalbe") is one of the largest open-pharmaceutical company in Southeast Asia. Kalbe handles multiple Over the counter (OTC) and prescription drug products (Woods, Promag, Mixagrip, Komix, Fatigon, etc.), energy drinks (Extra Joss) and nutrition (Chil Kid , Prenagen, Diabetasol, etc.).

I actually enjoyed the whole trip in this large and ambitious event, and all the elderly and helpers were all cheerful, patient and helpful!
