title : (Transport 12 of 14) – The Ojek
Probably one of the interesting and unique transportation forms in Jakarta is the “Ojek”, a simply “motorcycle taxis” that began appearing in Jakarta after becak were banned in 1994. Ojek service began as a people's initiative to provide a transportation options for people who used to use becak from main roads into housing complexes. There is no government licensing for or control over ojek.

Ojek services consist of guys with bikes lounging around street corners, outside malls, along bus-stops and angkot nodes. They somewhat seem surreptitious at times and will call out “Ojek ojek” as you walk pass. These guys will usually shuttle short distances down alleys and roads but will also do longer trips for a price, it’s a risk though putting your life at risk at a complete stranger.

Agree on the fare before you set off. Bargain before you get on - ask a local what the price should be first. By law all motorcycle passengers should wear helmets, but don’t expect to be provided with any. Ojek tend to congregate at t-junctions on main roads, near major transportation nodes and interchanges and near smaller roads that are not serviced by bus routes.
