(Transport 7 of 14) - Bemo

Another noisy little neighborhood vehicle is the bemo, whilst not as loud as the Bajaj, the Bemo is used for local transportation in limited areas in Jakarta. A cute little beetle-like vehicle that I’ve come to like due to it’s rather cute name. B-E-M-O.

Bemos operate like mini Mikrolets, not Bajajs and can barely sit 6 people comfortably (whilst the Mikolet can usually squeeze eleven Jakartans at the back). They are even rarer and harder to figure out than a Mikrolet.

Originally brought to Indonesia by the Japanese government as part of a disaster relief package in 1962, the vehicles were never manufactured in Indonesia in as great a number as bajaj or becak. Bemos can be found in and near Benhil, Tanjung Priok, Manggarai, Kramat Jati and other areas outside Jakarta.

Much much smaller than an Angkot

Bemos for everyone!
